Lately, have you found yourself needing or wanting anything new?
There is an app to fix it. Or, probably so.
When it comes to selecting and using mobile apps, one trend surpasses all others.
Weโre all over-apped.ย
Our is an over-apped, and apps-weary generation.
Mobile phones and mobile applications have resulted in a modern lifestyle of too many options and alternatives. Daily, any user with a mobile internet connection quickly gets spoilt for choice. All of us are.
Hardly any day passes without people using several apps on their mobile phones. At home, at work, at the gym, while driving, or even when trying to catch a nap, your phone and its apps follow you, as inseparable as your shadow.
As of December 2023, Google Play Store has 2.43 million apps; as of April 2024, the average smartphone user has 40 or more apps installed.
It is so easy to become overwhelmed by the overabundance of choices that one ends under-choosing or over-choosing. Under-choosing is when you choose less optimal apps with less functionality. With over-choosing, you find yourself running after every new appโโโshiny new app syndrome.ย
I like trying out new, better, and more functional apps. The drawback of over or under-choosing is a significant decrease in productivity and efficiency.ย
My Solution
Occasionally, I audit my list of installed apps and uninstall those Iโve not been using in a long while. My File Manager app frequently displays my list of long unused apps so I can uninstall them. Removing unused apps, frees up useful, speeds up your phone speed, and conserve your battery up-time.ย
I addressed the impact of smartphones in Your Life Through the โThree Screen Effectโ, and proposed ways to find harmony.
Recently, I re-explored Notion app and have written some articles on leveraging it for a minimalist digital lifestyle (inspired by Cal Newport).ย
With This App, Rule Your Life
And my mobile dashboard likes it soโโโthis Notion app.medium.com
My Notion dashboard has 13 modified (and renamed) Notion templates. Each template qualifies as a full-fledged โmust-have appโ on my Android devices synced to my desktop.
Using my Notion dashboard and either my own or pre-made templates, I managed to uninstall multiple apps on my phone. Now I have the equivalent of 13 apps elegantly and hands-on usefully under the hood of one single appโโโNotion.
There are still some standalone apps that duplicate some functions in my Notion templates. These I retain for archival and retrieval of old but useful information.
Takeaway
The key to mobile productivity is using apps that balance effectiveness and fun.ย
Choose and stick to apps that work for you, whether standalone or multifunctionalโโโlike Notion. Your insatiable searches for shiny new and better apps will always undermine your productivity.
And always ask, why will you run a taxi service with a Lamborghini when a Camry will put more money in your pocket?ย
