Nigeria, Bigotry and the Crumbling of A Great Hope
Nigeria, united we stand, bigoted we crumble.
In one of my recent Medium stories, I discuss how good followership is crucial for exceptional leadership. After reading the story, my Polish friend, always concerned about Nigeria asked,
So, in general, what's the future for Nigeria? How would you predict in a few sentences the next years, the next decade, till 2030-2035 for your country?
Here is my answer.
Hi ______ ,
Thanks for your interest in my country and for specifically always being concerned about my welfare.
Here is my answer to your question about where I see Nigeria in the next 5 to 10 years.
In a few words, the future of Nigeria is ominous and bleak.
Iโm not wishing evil upon my country. I hope and pray that things get better with time.
But I must be honest and here are my reasons. ๐
Last night, before seeing your question of today. I asked that same question after reading this Nigerian tweet on Twitter So, I canโt reverse the answer Iโve already given to my foreboding premonition.
In a past tweet, one guy (now dead) once wished our Peter Obi (the presumed real winner of the last 2023 presidential election) down by 6 feet. The individual who previously expressed a desire for PO's demise was reported as having fallen 6 feet deep (dead). Meanwhile, our Peter Obi is up, healthy, and all over the place.
Let me tell you, there is so much intertribal bigotry everywhere in Nigeria. Except for those who choose to never participate in bigotry, bigots, and counter-bigots are so prevalent that they pose a significant threat to our country.
The pervasive bigotry on Nigeriaโs Twitter has created such a toxic environment that it's hard to discern which tribe exhibits more prejudice.
Don't be fooled by appearances; Nigerians are sitting on a quiet but present and continuously active volcano โ of ethnic and religious bigotry.
The first solution to bigotry is โฆ
โฆ to cure oneself of religious and ethnic bigotry. Next, every Nigerian must purge themselves of this mutually destructive venom. Apart from this, the country is on the road to Rwanda. ๐ญ
Last night I read that tweet and asked myself, "What type of country is this?"
What type of country is this?
This is my answer. ๐๐
There is just no future for our country because many of our people prefer to breed ethnic bigots and get drunk with bigotry - ethnic and religious hatred.
I am not a pessimist, but this is the reality here.
Besides our countryโs long-standing woes and other societal ills, this present crop of new (and past) rulers seems to embolden, promote, and entrench ethnic bigotry through many of their actions and inactions.
Past and present, both rulers and followers have severely damaged the unity of our nation, leading some to believe we have regressed over 60 years in terms of backwardness โ all because of our disunity.
Iโm not proud to say it, but unless we and our rulers change, there is no future for our country, Nigeria. ๐ญ
We must all do the little we can to quench the flames of bigotry, and promote unity in every way. Yes.
Otherwise, I do not see any future for my country, Nigeria, 5 to 10 years from now. ๐ญ๐ญ
Kind regards.
Thanks for your reading time.
